Neck Pain Brookvale - Northern Beaches

Neck Pain

The neck, also called the cervical spine, contains the seven small vertebrae at the top of the spine that support your head. It is hardly surprising that the neck is so susceptible to injury when you consider that it is in almost constant motion enabling us to move our head (weighing around 5.5 kgs) in all directions, all day long. NeuroBalance Chiropractic in Brookvale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches offers an effective, drug-free treatment for neck pain. Call (02) 9938 5456 to arrange an initial assessment now.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can occur for a number of reasons.

  • It could be just the normal, wear and tear of everyday living and certainly worn joints are more problematic as we grow older, with a greater likelihood of osteoarthritis in the neck vertebrae.
  • Other causative factors include muscle strains and compressed nerves, where nerves branching from the spinal cord become ‘pinched’, perhaps due to a herniated disk or the development of bone spurs in the cervical spine.
  • Injury can also be a factor; the most common neck injury is probably ‘whiplash’, caused by ‘rear end shunts’ in car accidents.
  • Disease processes such as rheumatoid arthritis can also cause neck pain but these are much less common.

How Effective is Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain?

A very large study conducted in 2007 and published in the online Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics involved 19,722 patients who presented with various problems associated with neck pain including headaches, reduced movement and/or stiffness in the neck, shoulder or arm and back pain in the upper, mid section.

This was the first study to try to identify the variables predicting the outcome of treatment on the symptoms that patients were experiencing at the outset. Published results showed that after Chiropractic treatment, 70% of patients who presented with one symptom and 95% of patients who presented with four of the symptoms mentioned above, experienced immediate relief.

When Is Chiropractic Not Suitable?

Because Doctors of Chiropractic have undergone years of professional training, they are able to evaluate the very best treatment options for your neck pain. A Chiropractor will refer you to another healthcare practitioner if your symptoms suggest that this would be more beneficial for you. This will be the likely outcome of your initial assessment if:

Assessment indicates that you could be suffering from a tumour or spinal cord injury.

If you are experiencing neck pain accompanied by a high temperature, severe headache, possibly feeling nauseous or being sick, and/or are experiencing increased sensitivity to light, you could have an infection such as Meningitis that will need immediate treatment at a hospital.

The cause of neck pain might be one of a number of pre-existing conditions. These can include Fibromyalgia and Arthritis. Sometimes your Chiropractor may co-manage your condition with your GP.
