Sports Chiropractic is not just concerned with caring for sports related injuries for, or taking part in, sports competition. It is also concerned with how to prevent these injuries from happening in the first place, and optimizing the performance of all athletes whether amateur or professional.
Many people have some sort of imbalance in their body and while this may not be presenting any symptoms, the additional effort and stresses put on joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles could leave them prone to injury and unable to perform to their maximum capacity.
If you need advice on prevention of sports injuries, improving your athletic performance or on treating an existing injury to facilitate complete healing and a speedy return to fitness, call Doctors of Chiropractic at NeuroBalance Chiropractic in Brookvale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches today on 02 9938 5456 and arrange an appointment.
Sports Chiropractic, Proven Effective
Many sports professionals including golfers, tennis players and footballers, use and recommend Sports Chiropractic. It is multi-modal and deals with injury prevention, management of the inflammation and pain of injuries, rehabilitation, and the return to full fitness phase after injury.
A recent study, published by the National Institutes of Health on the effects of Sports Chiropractic discussed manual therapy and how it was designed to identify what improvements in injury reduction and recovery time would be experienced if Chiropractic treatment was introduced.
Two Australian Football clubs participated in the study. The fifty-nine players involved, were divided at random, into two groups:
- The first group received the normal regime – strength training, massage, physiotherapy and medical care to prevent and treat injuries occurring to the lower limbs. (Including hamstring injuries and muscle strains).
- The second group received the same regime as above, but with the addition of Chiropractic treatment once a week for the first six weeks of the Football season and less frequently thereafter (although any injuries occurring would receive more intensive treatment).
Chiropractic helped prevent injury and shorten recovery time for those who did get an injury. The difference in results between the two groups was huge!
- For hamstring injury, the group receiving Chiropractic care had only a 4% chance of hamstring injury compared with 17% for the ‘control’ group.
- The chance of muscle strain in the Chiropractic care group was only 4% by comparison with 28% in the ‘control’ group.
The results also clearly demonstrated that players in the Chiropractic care group missed fewer matches due to injury too.
